Founding Partner of Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute (JOI) and the first NFL Jacksonville Jaguars Team Physician, R. Stephen Lucie, MD, retires
For nearly 40 years, R. Stephen (Steve) Lucie, MD, was a recognized leader nationally, statewide, and locally in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine. In 1994, he and four other orthopaedic surgeons founded JOI, affiliated with Baptist Health. In 1995, the NFL expanded new franchises, and the Jacksonville Jaguars selected him as their first Team Physician. He was instrumental in developing the sports medicine program, building top-tier staff, and beginning an enduring legacy for the Institute. He is a former Chairman of JOI, president of Duval County Medical Society and the Florida Alliance of Sports Medicine Physicians.
Looking back on a personally satisfying and gratifying career, his focus was always on returning weekend warriors, injured athletes, and traditional patients back to an optimum level of function and mobility. As founder of the nationally recognized Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program affiliated with Baptist health, he was sought after far and wide by all levels of student athletes, their parents and coaches, athletic trainers, and sports medicine providers as a physician, friend, and inspirational mentor.
As he says farewell to Baptist Health and the generations of patients who gave their confidence and trust in his medical expertise, he will fulfill his national and statewide obligations as the current president of the Florida Orthopaedic Society and serve on the Boards of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.
Though he misses medical practice, Dr. Lucie believes it’s time to concentrate on his wonderful wife of 46 years, who stood by him when he was busy being “Jacksonville’s Doc”, and spend time with his two sons and their families, including five grandchildren. His loyal patients are transferred to well qualified, board-certified, and caring JOI physicians located in five convenient offices throughout NE FL. Prospective patients needing orthopaedic or sports medicine care should visit JOI.net or call 904-JOI-2000 to request an appointment.
