Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) uses your cells and tissue to induce a natural healing response

This customized treatment option is a procedure that’s different from using stem cells. Dr. Lucie uses an Arthrex® syringe system to safely and rapidly prepare autologous (your own cells or tissue) and customized Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP).

It’s just like a regular lab blood test. PRP has your body’s native platelets. This plasma is taken from a small sample of blood at the point of care, then spun for about five minutes in a centrifuge to separate the blood components (white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets). The platelets and growth factors or yellow serum plasma layer are the lighter components in our blood, and this process allows easy separation without causing damage. The PRP then can be mixed with autograft bone (a graft of tissue from the your own body) or allograft bone (bone or tissue transplanted from a donor person or a cadaver bone after preparation) prior to applying it to the surgical site. It’s been found that PRP has healing effects caused by growth factors released from the platelets, which may cause or induce a healing response. In other words using PRP concentrates the growth factors for therapeutic use via an injection directly into the elbow, hip, knee, shoulder, muscles and tendons.
